ARTIST BIO

The Short Story of Owen Brown- Artist

Born 1947, to art teacher Mother.

Studied at: Prahan Art College (now part of Swinburne U); National Gallery Art School) alongside St John Reed & Rick Amor), under John Brack; and England.

Taught Art: For over 30 years at Victorian secondary college, some primary schools, Moorabbin Tafe and in Italy as the resident artist with tours. Now teaching adult drawing and painting classes at local Community Centres.

Exhibitions: Full show at Mt Waverley Gallery (2007) Mornington Gallery (2011) and Aireys Inlet Gallery (2013). Numerous group shows.

Statement: I have a somewhat eclectic approach to painting in that I often change my style or technique according to the subject matter and how I see the topic.

I abhor formula painting- it is a bit like painting by numbers and completely removes one's learning & imagination- and when done for the sake of sales it is so demeaning of art generally and the actual work.

I do recognise the value of tonal aspects in a painting, but I an an unapologetic colourist.

Initially I work quickly to get an idea down on paper or canvas, then study that to work out where I am going to take the painting. Then I look always to see when I have achieved what I want, and finally set about modifying any problem 'bits'.

I generally don't paint 'pretty'- I would rather hear someone say that they see what I am getting at than say it is nice. I often get quirky in my painting.
