I was born in Adelaide, but have spent most of my life in Melbourne where I studied Fine Art, majoring in painting and printmaking. I have been painting landscapes for over 30 years; my work has featured in exhibitions both locally and overseas, and I have won awards both in Australia and internationally.
My paintings have always been centred on changing weather; as the oldest and the second driest continent on earth, Australia has always been the focus of extreme weather, which is central to my creative vision. In this era dominated by climatic change, I choose to create works which constitute a dichotomy; they draw attention to the severity of the weather experienced with climate change while at the same time, celebrate the beauty and fragility of the landscape which is so unique to Australia.
In 2021, my most recent exhbitions, including the London Art Biennale (winner of the Gagliardi Gallery Award for a future exhibition in London) can be viewed on my website at www.steffiewallacevisualart.com. I recently won the Bayside Art Gallery 'Portrait of Place' prize, details of which are also on the website.
In November of this year I became one of seven artists in residence selected by the Bayside Gallery for the 2022 Artists Studio Program at ‘Billilla’ in Brighton, Victoria. I feel very privileged to be in this position, and I look forward to connecting with other artists and members of the local community next year.
